How to use Coordinate Converter

  1. Paste or type a coordinate into the input box, latitude first. Examples: 40.7128, -74.0060 or 40°42'46"N 74°00'22"W or 18T 583960 4507524 or 18TWL 83963 45075.
  2. Check the line under the box. It shows the format it detected (DD, DMS, UTM, or MGRS) or an error such as COORDINATES OUT OF BOUNDS.
  3. Read the four cards: DECIMAL, DMS, UTM, and MGRS.
  4. Click the copy icon in the top-right corner of a card to copy that format.
  5. Not sure of the syntax? Click an Examples chip (New York, Reykjavík, or Tokyo) to load a sample.

Common use cases

  • Turning a DMS position from a property deed, survey plat, or old field notes into decimal degrees for Google Maps
  • Converting a UTM reference from a USGS topo map or a handheld GPS into latitude and longitude for a web map
  • Reading an MGRS grid from military, search-and-rescue, or emergency-management paperwork as plain lat/long
  • Formatting decimal coordinates from a spreadsheet or API as degrees, minutes, and seconds for a report or photo caption
  • Converting a geocache listing like N 40° 42.767 W 074° 00.360 into decimal degrees for a phone map
  • Checking a degrees-and-decimal-minutes position against what your GPS shows

Why Coordinate Converter?

You never pick an input format. It recognizes decimal degrees, DMS, decimal minutes, UTM, and MGRS and fills in all four outputs as you type. UTM math uses the WGS84 ellipsoid and handles the special zones around Norway and Svalbard. MGRS goes through the open-source mgrs library at 1-meter precision. The conversion runs in your browser. Your last input survives a reload but is cleared when you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

Decimal = degrees + minutes/60 + seconds/3600, made negative for S and W. So 40° 42' 46" N = 40 + 42/60 + 46/3600 = 40.71278, and 74° 0' 22" W = -(74 + 22/3600) = -74.00611. To go back, the whole number is the degrees, the remainder times 60 gives minutes, and that remainder times 60 gives seconds.
