A remove.bg alternative that never uploads your files
remove.bg made one-click background removal famous. It works by uploading your photo to its servers. InstantTools runs an AI cutout model, BRIA AI's RMBG-1.4, inside your browser instead. No credits, no account, and the photo stays on your device.
Where your file goes
remove.bg, part of Canva since 2021, processes images on its own servers with its own model. Its privacy policy says uploaded files are processed, offered for download, and deleted shortly after. Its paid plans unlock its top quality, automation, and scale, and its API charges credits per image. You can also choose to contribute an image to help improve its model.
InstantTools downloads BRIA AI's RMBG-1.4 model (about 170 MB) the first time you use the tool, then runs it on your device with WebAssembly. Your browser caches the model, so later runs skip the download. Your photo is never sent anywhere. The transparent PNG you download is made on your device at the same pixel size as your original, and the strip above the tool counts the bytes uploaded during your visit: zero.

When remove.bg is the better choice

How to remove a background in your browser
- Open the Background Remover and drop in a PNG, JPG, or WebP image.
- The first time, wait for the model to download. It is about 170 MB and comes from Hugging Face, where BRIA AI publishes it. A progress bar shows how far along it is. This download carries the model to you. Nothing carries your photo anywhere.
- The model runs on your device. Expect a few seconds on a recent laptop. Older phones take longer.
- Check the cutout next to the original. If it looks right, download the transparent PNG. It has the same width and height as the photo you started with.
- Next time, the model loads from your browser's cache and the download is skipped. If you clear this site's data, the next run downloads it again.
Honest questions
Is the quality as good as remove.bg?
Sometimes, not always. remove.bg uses its own model, tuned for this one job. RMBG-1.4 works best when the subject stands out clearly from the background, like a product on a plain surface or a person against a wall. Busy backgrounds and wispy hair are harder. Try your photo here first: the result shows next to the original before you download, and it costs nothing.
Why does the first run take a while?
The AI model downloads to your browser on first use (about 170 MB) and your browser caches it. That download is the model coming to you. Your image never goes the other way.
Is the result full resolution?
The PNG has the same width and height as your original. The model works out the cutout on a 1024 × 1024 copy of the image, then scales that mask up to full size. On very large photos, the edges can look a little softer than the rest of the image.
Can I remove backgrounds from many images at once?
Not here yet. The tool takes one image at a time. If you need hundreds, remove.bg's bulk tools and API are built for that.
How do I check that my photo is not uploaded?
Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and run the tool. On first use you will see the model files download from Hugging Face. You will not see any request that carries your image. The counter above the tool shows the same thing.
Verify it yourself
Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use any InstantTools file tool. After the page and its engine load, you will see no request carrying your file. That check takes thirty seconds and beats any privacy policy.
