How to write title tags that rank and get clicked

The title tag is the most important on-page SEO element. It is the first thing users see in search results, the text Google uses in the SERP link, and a primary signal for keyword relevance. A well-written title tag that matches search intent can improve click-through rate significantly — even for pages that rank in position 3 or 4. Google displays approximately 50–60 characters before truncating, which is roughly 600 pixels of rendered text on desktop.

Put the primary keyword near the beginning of the title. Google weights words closer to the start of the title more heavily, and users scanning search results naturally read from left to right. If your title begins with your brand name rather than the keyword, you are sacrificing the most valuable real estate. Move the keyword first, brand last — "Best Running Shoes for Flat Feet | BrandName" outperforms "BrandName | Best Running Shoes for Flat Feet" for keyword relevance and user attention.

Use emotional and action triggers strategically. Words like "free," "complete," "best," "how to," and "guide" increase click-through in informational queries. For transactional queries, "buy," "compare," and "cheapest" signal relevance to purchase intent. Number lists ("7 Ways to…") tend to perform well for navigational queries. Match the trigger words to the user intent behind your target keyword.

Avoid duplicate title tags across your site. Google treats duplicate titles as a quality issue and may rewrite them or rank the pages lower due to perceived thin or duplicate content. Each page should have a unique title that accurately describes its specific content — not a generic formula applied site-wide. Use this tool to generate distinct options and A/B test the best performers.
