How to use FAQs for SEO and AI visibility
FAQ sections are among the most effective additions to a web page for both traditional SEO and AI search visibility. They target long-tail queries directly, expand your content's keyword coverage, and provide pre-formatted answers that both search engines and LLMs can extract without parsing complex prose.
The People Also Ask (PAA) box in Google search results is powered by the same query-intent signals that make good FAQ questions. When Google shows "What is schema markup?" in a PAA box, it is because users frequently ask that exact question in relation to the surrounding topic. By structuring your FAQ questions around these PAA patterns — starting with how, what, why, when, can, or does — you increase the chance your answers appear as featured snippets or PAA entries.
For AI search, FAQs serve a different but complementary purpose. When Perplexity or Google AI Overviews receive a user question, they scan for pages where that question is directly addressed and answered. A page with 8 well-structured FAQs covers 8 possible user questions — each of which might trigger a separate AI-generated answer that cites your page. A page with only prose coverage of a topic covers that same ground far less efficiently from an AI extraction perspective.
After generating your FAQs, two next steps are high-impact: First, add the FAQ content to your page — either in an existing section or as a new "Frequently Asked Questions" section near the bottom. Second, implement FAQ schema (JSON-LD) on the page to enable Google's accordion rich result format. Use the FAQ Schema Generator to create the markup from your Q&A pairs. Together, these two steps — good FAQ content and FAQ schema — give you the best shot at both traditional SERP real estate and AI citation.
